Increase Mather sails for England on board the President.

April 17, 1688

Disguised as a sailor to elude an arrest order from Gov. Edmund Andros, Mather goes to London in an attempt to have the old Massachusetts Bay Colony charter reinstated. Although received by James II, he receives “vague promises from a forgetful king.” While Mather is in London, William of Orange accedes to the throne. Although Mather is unable to persuade the new king to reinstate the charter, he does persuade him to make some allowances for self government in in the new charter that is issued in 1691.*
